If you've ever wondered what it's like to be part of Kingston RFC.....

Next up in our bio feature, our 1XV captain Christy Obrien

Having moved to Surbiton back in 2019 I was keen to look for a new rugby club having drifted away from the sport during my last year of University. Thankfully Kingston was right on my doorstep and despite being a bit apprehensive for my first few training sessions, as I didn’t know anyone, I was made to feel very welcome and was given the opportunities by the coaches in training and in games to show what I had to offer.

Despite the 19/20 season being cut short due to covid the friendships I had already developed meant I was keen to get back on the pitch. From the start of last season I was appointed captain of the 1st XV ahead of the 2021/2022 season which was a massive honour given the amount of talent and characters throughout the group. To go through a season which would eventually finish with us lifting the Surrey 1 trophy is something which I will remember for a very long time.

As well as the on field stuff the club has so much to offer off the pitch as well. The regular socials we have every month are legendary…at this point (please feel free to search for pictures from our nativity social for instance) but there’s always people around to have a beer, or just a chat with after games. I’ve made such good connections with people from the club I can safely say I’ve created friends for life and this is a massive part of why I love Kingston so much.

I’m extremely excited ahead of what will certainly be a challenging upcoming season in a new league but I can’t wait to tackle it. I would encourage any player who’s thinking of joining a club, whether a newcomer or seasoned vet, to come to Hook Road because I can promise it’s something you won’t regret.
